The federal government began, this Monday (26), the second stage of implementation of the People’s Gas Program . THE The measure will serve 203,994 families in the state of Rio de Janeiro, through the provision of free vouchers to refill cooking gas cylinders. In this second phase, the program from the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger (MDS), in partnership with the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), reaches families in 17 Brazilian capitals.
The seventeen capitals that had not been included in November, in the first stage, have now been included: Aracaju (SE), Boa Vista (RR), Brasília (DF), Campo Grande (MS), Cuiabá (MT), Curitiba (PR), Florianópolis (SC), João Pessoa (PB), Macapá (AP), Maceió (AL), Manaus (AM), Palmas (TO), Porto Velho (RO), Rio Branco (AC), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), São Luís (MA) and Vitória (ES).
In November 2025, the first Gás do Povo concession was granted to almost one million families in ten capitals: Belém (PA), Belo Horizonte (MG), Fortaleza (CE), Goiânia (GO), Natal (RN), Porto Alegre (RS), Recife (PE), São Paulo (SP), Salvador (BA) and Teresina (PI).
According to the government, with 10,000 sales points accredited in less than two months, one in every six LPG (cooking gas) resellers in the country is connected to the initiative. In this way, practically all families have a resale within 2 kilometers of their residence, “in a strategy that seeks logistical efficiency and territorial presence, essential to combat energy poverty.”

“The benefit relieves the family budget of the poorest, who can use the money they would spend on the cylinder to buy food or meet other basic needs”, said, in a statement, the Minister of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger, Wellington Dias.
The forecast is that Gás do Povo will be fully operational in March, when 15 million families (around 50 million people) in all 5,571 municipalities will be covered. The initiative also has the participation of Caixa Econômica Federal.
“It is a policy that brings dignity, health and food security to millions of families. In March, the program will be in all municipalities in the country, and will consolidate the largest program to promote clean cooking in the world”, stated, in a statement, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira.
To be eligible, the family must be a Bolsa Família beneficiary with at least two people, have a per capita income of up to half the minimum wage and keep the Single Registry updated in the last 24 months. Furthermore, it is essential that the CPF of the family responsible is in order, and that the registration does not present pending issues such as registration investigation or evidence of death.
According to Palácio do Planalto, the cost of recharging and the complexity of its distribution in more remote areas prevented many homes from having access to clean and safe energy. “As a result, the reality for many was the use of precarious alternatives, such as firewood, coal and kerosene, which exposed women and children, mainly, to unhealthy environments, marked by toxic smoke and the potential to develop respiratory diseases, in addition to the danger of burns”.

Node app “Meu Social – Gás do Povo”, families can check if they are eligible, check the status of the voucher and find accredited resellers. They also find the telephone number and address of accredited points, in case the person wants to call the establishment and ask questions.
There are also three other ways to use the voucher so that the families served are better able to access the program, considering, for example, cases of people without access to the internet or cell phones.
