The city of Rio prepared an operational plan for the 29th Rio 2024 LGBTI+ Pride Parade, this Sunday (24), on the Copacabana waterfront. The participants will gather from 11 am, on Avenida Atlântica, at post 5. The start of the parade is scheduled for 3 pm and will go from Atlântica to Rua Rodolfo Dantas.
This year, the public will be able to watch performances by artists supporting the cause in ten trios spread across the waterfront. Among them will be Duda Beat, Diego Martins, Unna X, Gael, Mc Bianca, WD, Reddy Allor, Thaís Macedo and Pedro Mussum. The National Anthem will be performed once again by the actress, singer, DJ, writer and performer Valéria Barcellos, celebrating the representation of trans women. For 12 years the hymn was sung by Divina Diva Jane Di Castro, who died in 2020.
The city hall’s scheme mobilizes actions from various municipal bodies with teams at the Rio Sem Preconceito tent, set up between Sá Ferreira and Souza Lima streets, close to the concentration site. There, the Sexual Diversity Coordination (CDS-Rio) and the Municipal Health Department (SMS) will, until 3 pm, provide services to the public who will receive information and pre-register for projects such as DAM + and Garupa.
DAM+ is aimed at those who want to complete primary education and prepare for access to public bodies through competitions for trans, transvestites and non-binary people. Garupa seeks to facilitate the connection of LGBTQIA+ people to health services.
Still in the tent, the public will be able to receive information about legislation on the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community and the services provided by the city hall. Assistance will also be provided, such as receiving complaints by legal technicians and registration for programs developed by the Sexual Diversity Coordination.
The Rio de Janeiro LGBTI+ Pride Parade seeks to promote contact between the general population and the diversity present in the world. Based on this data, it works so that future generations grow in a better place and develop in a more tolerant society, without LGBTQIA+phobia.
CDS-Rio coordinator, Carlos Tufvesson, said that CDS-Rio’s main mission is to combat prejudice. “I believe that this is how we will change sad data, such as the high rates of crimes against this population across the country. The parade is an event for everyone above sexual orientation or gender identity”, he stated.
Transit
The Rio Traffic Engineering Company (CET-RIO) began banning vehicle traffic yesterday at 11:30 pm, suspending circulation on Avenida Atlântica, on the road along the waterfront, between Francisco Otaviano and Miguel Lemos streets, for the positioning of electric trios.
Today, at 7am, the leisure area was opened on the same road, as is the case on Sundays and holidays. The road next to the buildings, from Rua Joaquim Nabuco to Avenida Princesa Isabel, in addition to its access points, may also be gradually closed depending on the flow of public arrivals.
The leisure area and the track closure next to the buildings will remain until the end of the event. The road must be cleared by the public and the lanes cleaned, allowing vehicle traffic to be opened until 11pm. The turnaround on the building track will operate at its usual time, from 7am to 6pm.
Recommendations
The city hall suggests that the public use public transport to arrive and leave the stop and, due to traffic closures, asks drivers to look for alternative routes for their journeys and, if possible, avoid passing through the region, because the traffic will be impacted. The Municipal Transport Department set up a mobility scheme with bus route diversions in place and increased travel on lines operating in the region.
Subway
This Sunday, MetrôRio will operate until 11pm. Line 2 will operate between Pavuna and General Osório/Ipanema, and the transfer between lines 1 and 2, in the section between Central do Brasil/Centro and General Osório/Ipanema stations. The concessionaire suggested that Cantagalo/Copacabana Station be used for disembarking; and Siqueira Campos/Copacabana for the return trip.
Public order
The Public Order Secretariat (Seop) and the Municipal Guard will work with 430 agents and 55 vehicles in support of the parade. SEOP’s Parking and Trailer Inspection Coordination will work nearby to prevent illegal parking. The operation will be reinforced by the special Mobile Tactical, Motorcyclist and Special Operations groups, which will be on the main streets leading to the event.
Monitoring
Throughout the LGBTI+ Pride Parade, the Rio Operations Center will monitor the entire region with around 200 cameras installed on the Copacabana waterfront and other roads in the neighborhood. A total of 50 operators will be on duty in the Situation Room, in Cidade Nova. “The operators will monitor the main blocking points and access points to the Copacabana neighborhood. A drone will also be used to assist the operation in places where there are no monitoring cameras”, informs the text from the city hall.
Work Rio
Teams from the Rio Municipal Department of Labor and Income will be, between 10 am and 1 pm, at a stand between Sá Ferreira and Souza Lima streets providing information about the employability and qualification programs developed by the department.
Cleaning
The special cleaning operation set up by Comlurb includes 380 workers, 327 of whom are street cleaners, cleaning the sand, the cycle path, the promenade, Avenida Atlântica and the access roads. Sweeping, collection and removal of waste will be done before, during and after the shutdown.

All cleaning routines in the neighborhood will be maintained normally, including the Praia Limpa project, which intensifies cleaning along the entire coastline”, informed Comlurb.

The Military Police prepared a scheme that includes 1448 agents working on the coast and at the access points to Copacabana Beach. According to the State Secretariat of Military Police, organizers estimate that around 500,000 people will participate in the 29th Rio 2024 LGBTI+ Pride Parade.
