Rio has a new hangover warning this weekend

A new hangover is about to arrive on Rio’s beaches. In this one, from 3pm this Saturday (3), expected to end at 6am on Monday (5), the waves can vary between 2.5 m and 3 m. The alert made by the Operations and Resilience Center of Rio City Hall (COR-Rio) is based on the Hangover Warning for the City’s Waterfront issued by the Brazilian Navy.Rio has a new hangover warning this weekend

This will be the second in a few days. In the other, which started at 12pm on Wednesday (31st) and ended at 6am yesterday (1st), the waves reached 2.5 meters in height and had a major impact. The Fire Department carried out 1,167 rescues between 7am on Wednesday (31st) and 7pm yesterday (1st) on beaches in Rio.

The Fire Department spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Fábio Contreiras, said that there is no need to set up a special scheme for this period even with the large number of visitors and residents visiting the beaches. As explained, since December 19, 2025, the corporation has been operating with more agents in Operation Summer.

“There are over 5,400 lifeguard services this summer as a whole. We already have the beach reinforced,” he told Brazil Agency.

The fact of having a new hangover, according to the lieutenant colonel, is also a reason for warning at other points outside the beaches such as the fishermen’s wall, in Leme; Arpoador Stone; and Mirante do Leblon, which are isolated with zebra stripes.

“When there is a warning of a hangover, our lifeguards do isolation and signage work precisely so that people do not go near those places where there is a risk of falling,” he said.

COR-Rio reinforced the guidelines so that the population can be safer. Swimming in the sea and practicing water sports in areas with surf conditions are not recommended. During the warning period, people must avoid staying at viewpoints on the coast or in places close to the sea, just as fishermen should not sail while the surf is active. The use of bicycles on cycle paths is also not recommended, mainly because waves can overtake the sidewalks.

COR-Rio’s guidance in cases of accidents at sea is not to try to rescue victims on your own. The best thing to do is to immediately call the Fire Department by calling 193 or the local lifeguards.

Forecast

The Rio Alert System indicated that this Saturday (3) the weather will be influenced by areas of instability together with the passage of a cold front in the ocean.

“There will be predominantly cloudy skies and a forecast of isolated light rain in the morning and isolated showers from the afternoon onwards, which may come with lightning”, he informed, adding that the winds will be weak to moderate.

On Sunday (4), the forecast is for a predominance of cloudy skies with showers at any time of the day. Winds will be moderate and temperatures will decline. Monday (5) and Tuesday (6) will be days with varying cloud cover, predominantly cloudy skies and light rain forecast at any time, occasionally being moderate on Monday. Winds will be moderate.
