Among the 5.4 million people in the city of Rio de Janeiro who have already completed the basic vaccination schedule against covid-19, with two doses or a single dose, about 600 thousand are already able to receive the booster dose, but have not yet returned to their posts.
The Municipal Health Department (SMS) warned that the protection offered by vaccines decreases over time, so there is a need to reinforce immunization after 4 months of the second dose, so as not to put the vaccination campaign at risk.
City hall panels indicate that 456,600 people took the first dose of the vaccine and did not return to the posts to complete the basic scheme against covid-19. Another 16,700 did not even receive their first immunization. These numbers have been gradually decreasing, since last week there were 470 thousand without the second dose and 19 thousand without any.
Of the total population of the city, 87.7% received the first dose, 82.1% are on the second dose or single dose and 33.5% have already taken the booster dose. Of the population eligible to receive the vaccine from 5 years of age, 92.3% received the first dose and 87.4% are on the complete two-dose schedule.
According to Fiocruz, those who had covid-19 need to wait 30 days to be vaccinated, counted from the beginning of symptoms or positive testing, in case of asymptomatic.

So far, 70,100 children from 5 to 11 years of age have been vaccinated in the city, which is equivalent to 13% of the total of 560,000 expected by the city hall. Of this total, 2,405 have some comorbidity and 1,534 are children with disabilities. Boys and girls in these conditions can be taken to the posts on any day, regardless of the calendar by age.
Today (27), 9-year-old children can be vaccinated and tomorrow and on Saturday it is the turn of 8-year-olds or older. Next week, the schedule of one day for girls, another for boys and the third for the repechage will return, in decreasing age, ending the schedule on February 9 with the repechage for children from 5 years of age. However, according to the availability of doses, the Department of Health reported that it can advance the calendar.
Epidemiological situation
Among the 228,000 confirmed cases this January alone in the city, which already corresponds to 77% of all registered cases of covid-19 in the whole of 2021 and exceeded the total of 2020 cases by 4%, 11,000. were in children up to 9 years of age and 15,200 in young people between 10 and 19 years of age. Serious cases total 1,071 this year and deaths have reached 160.
Of the 1,218 people who needed hospitalization in the municipal network this month for covid-19, 202 were people under 40 years of age. At the moment, the prefecture panel indicates 750 hospitalized for covid-19.
