The Institute of Public Security (ISP) of Rio de Janeiro took stock of arrests and seizures of weapons and drugs in the state in 2024. In twelve months, the Civil and Military Police removed 732 circulation rifles, an average of two a day. Data released last Friday (24) show a 20% increase in seizures between 2023 and 2024. There were 610 long-range weapons collected in 2023, against 732 war weapons seized last year.
In 2024, state security forces registered 42,389 arrests in the act, representing an increase of 14.7% compared to 2023. There were also 23,930 drug seizure records, 6.2% more; 19,034 stolen/stolen vehicles were recovered, 52 every 24 hours, a growth of 29.7%.
Crimes against life also had a reduction. The violent lethality indicator, which encompasses willful homicide, bodily injury followed by death, murder and death from state agent intervention, recorded a reduction of 11.1% between January and December 2024, when compared with the same period of 2023. Dolid homicides and state agent intervention deaths also fell last year, with decreases of 11% and 19.8%, respectively.
According to ISP’s CEO Marcela Ortiz, the results achieved in 2024 reinforce the importance of the constant work of Rio’s security forces in confronting violence. “The transparency of data released by ISP is fundamental, as it helps in the construction of public policies to combat crime and the most efficient planning of public security.”
