Rio de Janeiro represents 74% of natural gas production in the country, in a new record pointed out in the seventh edition of the Gas Perspectives Study on Rio 2024-2025, of the Rio de Janeiro State Federation of Industries (Firjan). While national average production grew 1% by 2024, reaching a level of 151 million cubic meters per day (m³/day), the state reached 113 million m³/day, driven by the growth of 6% in production.
“The federation adopts natural gas as one of the strategic pillars of action for the development of industry and the economy of Rio de Janeiro. Our state is the hub of the country’s natural gas, agent of decarbonization of our economy, as a powerful tool to increase the competitiveness of local industry and, at the same time, strengthen the energy security of the state and the country, ”said Firjan President Luiz Césio Caetano .
The study points out that national reserves grew 46% in 2023, from fields in waters in Rio de Janeiro. Rio now represents 72% of national reserves, accounting for 372 billion/m³ of 517 billion/m³ in the country.
Firjan also mapped that investments along the value chain of natural gas over the next ten years exceed R $ 150 billion, which will enable the generation of more than 60,000 direct and indirect jobs, depending on the realization of projects.
“The year 2024 was remarkable for the gas market with large advances in opening the free natural gas market. The migration of industries to the gas free market is not only viable, but is essential for the sustainable growth of our economy. Industries be urgent for the right to seek solutions in the market that provide gains from competitiveness, with the freedom of choice of its supplier, ”says the Federation President.
