Rio Climate March calls for environmental and climate justice

Fliparacatu brings together 63 national and international authors

Rio de Janeiro hosted the Climate March this Friday (20), bringing together activists, organizations and social movements that are joining the Global Climate Act, which is being held today in 15 other cities in Brazil. The act is being repeated around the world for environmental and climate justice and against environmental racism. Rio Climate March calls for environmental and climate justice

The protest began in Cinelândia and gathered hundreds of protesters until Arcos da Lapa, where the campaign “Rio Capital of Climate Chaos” was launched. The march began in 2007 to prevent greenhouse gas emissions from exceeding tolerable levels.

“We need to fight to avoid the worst. But we are already in the midst of climate collapse. The year 2025 will be much worse than 2024. 2026 will be worse than 2025. And it’s not the La Niña phenomenon, no. It’s the economic development model. It’s the large estates, it’s oil. That’s what destroys the climate and destroys human life,” said Pedro Graça Aranha, coordinator of the Climate Coalition in Rio de Janeiro.

The protesters recalled that humans are harming the planet’s climate by cutting down forests, causing fires and causing floods. They warn that the world’s average global temperature has already exceeded 1.5º Celsius (ºC) and could reach 3ºC by the end of the century, which will affect the entire climate of the planet, causing glaciers to melt and sea levels to rise.
