Following the example of the Legislative Assembly, the Rio City Council will also award gymnast Rebeca Andrade the Hélio Gracie sports merit title, awarded to athletes who excel in sports activities. Hélio Gracie was responsible for introducing jiu-jitsu to Brazil.
Rebeca, 25, is the all-time record holder for Brazil, with six Olympic medals, including two gold medals in artistic gymnastics. This year, at the Paris Olympics, she won her second gold medal in floor exercise.
The gymnast was also champion in the vault competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games and won silver in the individual all-around. Rebeca also won two silver medals in Paris, in the vault and in the individual all-around, as well as a bronze in the team event.
Revered by her main rivals on the podium in the floor event, the gymnast, born in Guarulhos, São Paulo, is an athlete for Flamengo. She is considered a reference for young athletes today.
“Rebeca has made us proud. She represents Brazil in its entirety. A young girl who conquered the world with dedication and perseverance. She is proof that sport has the power to transform. May our young people be inspired by Rebeca and believe in their potential,” said Carlo Caiado, president of the Rio de Janeiro City Council.
