´Symbol of the capital of Rio, Christ the Redeemer celebrates its 93rd anniversary this Saturday (12). The day of celebration began with a mass of thanksgiving for the monument’s anniversary, at 9 am, presided over by the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, Cardinal Orani João Tempesta. Then, there were congratulations to Christ the Redeemer, organized by the Sociedade Amigos da Rua da Carioca e Adjacências (Sarca), with the distribution of a commemorative cake to visitors. In the afternoon, there will be masses at 3pm and 5pm in the sanctuary.
“The celebration of these 93 years of the sacred monument to Christ the Redeemer will work on the universal perspective of redemption, a Christ for everyone and for everyone”, highlights the rector of the Christ the Redeemer Sanctuary, Father Omar Raposo.
The party continues this Sunday (13th), at 9 am, when the distribution of toys and children’s books from the Clássico é Brincar social campaign will delight the children, this time in Morro da Providência, in the central region of Rio.
On Monday (14), at 10am, at the Cristo Redentor Sanctuary, three groups from the Padaria Artesanal social project will graduate. The project aims to promote entrepreneurial training as a way of stimulating productive inclusion, formalization and generation of employment and income, especially for the population in situations of social vulnerability. The classes have 30 students from different favelas in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Monument
Christ the Redeemer, one of the seven wonders of the modern world, is located at the top of Corcovado Hill, 709 meters above sea level, within the Tijuca National Park. The front part of the statue faces Guanabara Bay and the back faces the Tijuca Forest.
The monument was made of reinforced concrete and soapstone and is 30 meters high, not counting the 8 meter pedestal. It is the largest statue in the world in the Art Deco style. Its arms stretch 28 meters wide and the structure weighs 1,145 tons.
