After almost 20 years at the top of world cycling, Rigoberto Urán decided to end his professional career. The prominent Colombian cyclist, known for his charisma and perseverance, announced last February 2024 that he will retire once his contract with the EF Education-EasyPost team ends, which means that his last competition would be in December 2024.

In an interview with The ColombianUrán expressed his gratitude to cycling, a sport that has given him countless experiences and friendships.

The rider also highlighted the support he received throughout his career, emphasizing that he leaves cycling “calm and happy.” “There is no other plan. What we decided this year about retirement we have ready. As you know, my contract with my team (EF Education) ends in December and in 2025 I will be doing other different things. I am grateful to the people who supported me in my career, so I leave cycling calm and happy,” he told the media.

New horizons: «A Frustrated Dream»

With his sights set on the future, Rigoberto Urán shared his desire to dedicate himself to professional football, a dream he has always had. “I’m going to dedicate myself to professional football, it’s a frustrated dream, and I’m going to try it and see what happens. Now Rigo’s novel is nominated for the Emmy Awards, it’s crazy, but my goal is to be a professional soccer player. Nothing is lost, you know that I am very crazy but I like to do things,” he expressed with a smile.

Throughout his career, Urán has left an indelible mark on Colombian and international cycling. “Cycling was everything to me, my life, my university,” he reflected.

Finally, the cyclist feels satisfied with what he has achieved. “Totally, too happy with what I did, with my results and the friends I have. Cycling has given everything to me, and as a company and family we learned that if we were going to do something, we were going to do it well. So the respect that I feel for my sport is very great,” he concluded.
