In the context of the return to the political scene of Pedro Bordaberry, former senator of the Colorado Party (PC), a meeting was held with Álvaro Delgado, presidential candidate for the National Party (PN).
The meeting focused on addressing issues relevant to the country’s political future, according to the perception of both, including the fight against corruption and support for the plebiscite on night raids.
The exchange, which took place at Delgado’s campaign headquarters and lasted approximately one hour, allowed both leaders to discuss key issues. Bordaberry, who has recently expressed his intention to run for Senatehighlighted the long collaborative relationship between him and Delgado, mentioning their time together in the Senate as “colleagues.”
The conversation mainly focused on the introduction of a bill on the crime of illicit enrichment, a measure that could influence the fight against corruption, according to those involved.
Bordaberry and Delgado: strategic political meeting of the right-wing coalition
Both agreed on the need to “strengthen the budgets of the oversight agencies.” From their perspective, this measure is essential to combat corruption and money laundering, problems that require structural attention.
They also discussed the plebiscite on night raids, agreeing to establish a joint working team between the parties of the Republican coalition to promote this initiative.
Asked about the possibility of a dialogue table between the coalition partners in a possible second government, Bordaberry stressed that this specific issue was not discussed in depth.
However, he noted that existing good relations suggest that effective collaboration “comes about itself” based on mutual willingness to work together despite institutional formalities.
Regarding the possible role of Roberto Lafluf as an advisor in Delgado’s campaign, Bordaberry said that he “would not take it.” He stressed that Lafluf has not been convicted and is authorized to work, making it clear that the decision rests exclusively with Delgado and his team.
