In the session of last Tuesday, February 15, the Municipal Council of Panama approved calling the tender for the construction of the new Seafood Market, which will be located in Calidonia.
The proposal was not on the agenda and was included at the beginning of the session, along with other projects. In addition, the majority of the representatives agreed to approve the projects en bloc. The approval of authorizing the mayoral administration to call the tender was given with a vote of 24 votes in favor and 2 against.
Representatives Guillermo “Willie” Bermúdez, from Don Bosco, and Ricardo Domínguez, from Bella Vista, were the ones who voted against.
This Thursday morning, Domínguez argued on Radio Panama that “our bench has never been formally presented to us with everything we have heard through the media or Mayor Fábrega giving interviews.”
He added that for this initiative of the head of the capital commune, a broad citizen consultation was not given, since this was only done in a single corregimiento to 25 people.
“It is a citizen consultation where only 25 people attended, a single township, at a time of pandemic, I believe that a project like the Seafood Market that represents the entire city, a project of around B/. 40 million should not be a query only for a corregimiento but it should be a query for the entire city,” he said.
The new Seafood Market will cost approximately $40 million to $50 million.
