The producers of rice of the province of Montecristi asked the Dominican Government this Saturday to hear their claims due to the floods that affect their crops.
They indicated that a large area of land planted with rice in the Caño Blanco de Copey, is under water due to the saturation of the rivers caused by the rains.
They point out that this situation puts in danger the harvest of cereal, with the threat of million-dollar losses in the sector. For this reason, they ask the director of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (Indhri), Olmedo Caba Romano, to send the amphibian known as “the duck”, to remove weeds from the Caño Blanco River, in the community of Copey, Manzanillo municipality.
They assure that this action would allow the water flow towards the mangroves of Manzanillo, preventing the overflow of the riverbed and protecting the crops of rice.
The rice cookers have indicated that, if they do not receive aid, they will lose some 30 thousand tasks rice. They insist that, if President Luis Abinader does not intervene with the necessary equipment to clean and remove the debris, the situation could have unfavorable consequences for the Copey community and its local economy.
