The Electoral Board of the Justicialist Party (PJ) has proclaimed Cristina Kirchner as president of the party, marking a significant milestone in Argentine politics. This decision came after an internal electoral process that was marked by controversy and judicialization.
The governor of La Rioja, Ricardo Quintela, who had presented an alternative list, decided not to continue with the judicialization of the conflict, paving the way for the proclamation of Cristina Kirchner.
The process began when the PJ Electoral Board challenged Quintela’s list, arguing that it did not meet the necessary requirements, specifically regarding the endorsements required to participate in the internal election.
Judge María Servini, with electoral jurisdiction, rejected Quintela’s request to suspend the party elections and endorsed the resolution of the Electoral Board. This left Cristina Kirchner as the only viable candidate for the party presidency.
Before the officialization, Cristina Kirchner He led an event in Avellaneda, where he harshly criticized the government of Javier Milei. In his speech, he compared the government model to yogurt, saying it “has an expiration date.”
Kirchner called to coordinate with all affected sectors to build a patriotic alternative, similar to his strategy in 2017 when he formed Unidad Ciudadana to confront Cambiemos.
Assumption
For his part, Ricardo Quintela, after a meeting at the Casa de La Rioja, confirmed that he would not appeal the disqualification of his list before the National Electoral Chamber. He also expressed that, although he respected Cristina Kirchner’s leadership, he did not agree with the methodology used and would maintain a critical position within the party.
This decision was seen as a gesture of unity and a step towards consolidating Kirchner’s leadership in the PJ. The proclamation of Cristina Kirchner As president of the PJ, she was approved with 13 positive votes and one dissenting vote. The “Homeland First” list, headed by Kirchner, was the only one to meet the requirements established in the electoral schedule. The former president will formally take office on November 17.
