The re-elected mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), took to the stage about half an hour after the result was declared by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), alongside family members and supporters, and spoke to thank the São Paulo native for his support. The re-elected president recalled the attacks directed at his wife and the support of governor Tarcisio de Freitas, who was next to him on stage. “The campaign is over, the time for differences has passed, and we will govern for everyone,” he stated.
When citing the criticisms and positions of his two main opponents, he said that “democracy has left a great lesson”.
“Balance defeated all extremism. São Paulo spoke and sent a message throughout the country. What the people need is jobs, security, improvements and opportunities,” he said.
He remembered former mayor Bruno Covas, when he said that politics cannot be done with hate. Nunes was elected vice-mayor of Covas four years ago, and whose son, Tomas, was present at the celebration, among the politicians.
Ricardo Nunes spoke of the works carried out and the recognition of his government’s efforts. “Politics cannot be carried out with masks instead of achievements, with positions of ideological extremes, but must be concerned with concrete results for the population.”
A constant presence on campaign platforms, governor Tarcísio de Freitas accompanied Nunes at this Sunday’s event, and attributed the victory to the broad front formed around the campaign. “It was a victory for work over sealing, and there is much more to come,” he said.
With a majority in the City Council in his first term, Nunes, who had two terms as a councilor, had active electoral candidates and parliamentarians elected, with political weight in the dispute in his two rounds, some of whom participated in management in secretariats and sub-prefectures, especially in the last two years.
Controversial speeches
Ricardo Nunes, who was already confident during an interview given to the press after voting in the south zone of the capital in the morning, became involved in controversy during the day, when governor Tarcísio de Freitas, accompanying him, commented on a factoid involving the supposed direction of First Command of the Capital faction by the vote of pre-trial prisoners and relatives of prisoners against right-wing candidates.
Candidate Guilherme Boulos, in a press conference in the afternoon, considered the comment a serious electoral crime. His campaign filed a lawsuit with the Regional Electoral Court (TRE) in response to the governor’s statements.
The governor’s statement came after speeches by Nunes, who commented on Boulos’ participation in a podcast interview on Friday (25) and reinforced the speeches in which he placed the PSOL federal deputy as a candidate “of disorder”, repeating the tone used throughout the campaign.
In a statement, Nunes’s office declared that “for now, Ricardo Nunes’ (MDB) campaign will not comment on Guilherme Boulos’ (PSOL) recent requests to Justice”.
