The ex-president Ricardo Lagos addressed the new constituent process. In this regard, he expressed fears with the future members of the Expert Commission -composed of 24 people, 12 appointed by the Chamber of Deputies and 12 by the Senate-, indicating that “some want to elect ‘buddies’ and not true experts” .
“If the experts are not up to the task, we will be in trouble. That is what worries me the most today. I hope they choose the best so that there are no questions. Public opinion, the media will be attentive. And some think they can name their chief of staff. That can’t be!” the president said in an interview with Thirdpublished this Sunday.

Likewise, he expressed that “one sees very prestigious names coming out, young people who have many titles, but who are at the beginning of their career. And if we have learned anything in these months, it is that you also have to have a little experience. No only the wisdom that they give you papers or professional titles. There has to be experience, legitimate people.”
Along these lines, he pointed out that his concern is “that the leaders live up to that definition.”
“I’m afraid that some want to choose some “buddies” out there and not true experts. And that’s not how countries are built. There are times when you have to think big and put the national interest above personal interest,” he added.
Regarding the Government of the President gabriel boric, Lagos stated that “they are having a learning process of what it is to govern. Everyone is probably learning where the phones are.”
The former head of state also referred to the pardons granted by President Boric to 13 people -12 convicted in the context of the social outbreak and to the ex-frontist Jorge Mateluna-.
“I think that the Government has made a self-criticism and has responded in a very powerful way with the appointment of the new Minister of Justice. That is where the issue lies. And, of course, I would say: a pastry chef to his cakes. The normal thing in the Ministry of Justice is that whoever is in that position, regardless of their political color, has to be a jurist recognized by their peers,” he said.
