Ricardo Alarcón de Quesada dies at the age of 84

MIAMI, United States. – Cuban politician Ricardo Alarcón de Quesada, former ambassador and former president of the National Assembly of People’s Power, died this 1st. May at the age of 84, reported official media of the island.

Alarcón was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1992 to 1993, Cuban Ambassador to the UN, and for 20 years he presided over the Island’s Parliament. In addition, he was a member of the Central Committee of the Party since the Second Congress, and a member of its Political Bureau since the Fifth Congress.

According to his biography, reproduced this Sunday by official media on the island, when he was very young he joined the July 26 Movement. Later, after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, he was elected president of the FEU and, shortly after, appointed director of the Americas of MINREX.

“All our tribute to the beloved Ricardo Alarcón in loyalty to the Revolution, the Party, foreign policy and the glorious tradition of MINREX”, wrote on Twitter Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla.

For her part, the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Josefina Vidal, posted: “To Ricardo Alarcón de Quesada, the Master of diplomats of our generation, we will always have deep respect, admiration and infinite affection. Thank you for the privilege and honor of being his disciples.”

According to the official organ of the Communist Party of Cuba, GranmaAlarcón “will be remembered as a thoroughgoing revolutionary for his anti-imperialism and his revolutionary fidelity.”
