Consular authorities from Brazil and Bolivia met with representatives of Puerto Suarez and El Carmen Rivero Torrez. The mayor of Corumbá, Marcelo Iunes, also present at the meeting, raised the need to review the Treaty of Roboré, as well as the ordinance that establishes the criteria for the definition of twin cities in border regions.
The meeting was held on Friday, January 28 and dealt with issues related to customs trade, foreign trade, trade agreements, health care and education. The situation of cross-border reciprocity agreements was also addressed.
The Brazilian consul in Puerto Quijarro, Silvio Assumpção, and the Bolivian consul in Mato Grosso do Sul, Simons William Durán Blacutt, participated in the discussions.
Iunes stressed that “We live day to day and we have to work together so that our regions, which include Corumbá, Ladário, Puerto Quijarro, Puerto Suárez, grow and develop together”.
The Carmen Rivero Tórrez is located about 100 kilometers from Corumbá. and it is also linked to the consumer pole of Brazilian products that are acquired in border towns.
At the suggestion of the mayor of Corumbá, it was decided that the cities will meet with their respective consular authorities to define the proposals and suggestions that will be submitted to the governments of Brazil and Bolivia.
“Here, in Corumbá, we will meet with the Brazilian consul and the Bolivian cities with the Bolivian consular authorities. Thus, we will be able to define the proposals so that we can send them to the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Brazil and Bolivia”, informed Iunes.
The mayor of Corumbá took advantage of the meeting to name the mayor of Puerto Suárez, Mauricio Montero Yorge, as Corumbá’s Guest of Honor; the mayor of El Carmen Rivero Tórrez, Celvy Orellana Costa; the president of the Municipal Council of Puerto Suárez, María de Lourdes Méndez Durán; and the president of the Municipal Council of El Carmen Rivero Tórrez, Róger Brito.
