Some 200 retired military personnel and their families demonstrated this Saturday in Plaza Bolívar, in Bogotá, against President Gustavo Petro, while asking Congress to stop his government’s reforms and impeach the president for corruption.

“We are tired of a socialist government that wants to destroy the national heritage, to steal it. It has plundered the nation and wants to keep power,” said one of the protesters.
The demonstration against the Government took place at a time when, in another part of the city, Petro decorated several military leaders at the opening of the traditional Independence Day parade.

“They want to turn us into a second Venezuela,” said the protester, alluding to the fact that Colombia, according to him, could suffer a deep political, social and economic crisis like the one that has been experienced for years in the oil-producing country.

The retired military officer said that the protest also seeks to get the congressmen to stop the reforms “but to have a political trial” against Petro because the head of state’s campaign allegedly violated the limits on electoral spending.
Relatives of the soldiers held up banners reading: “Young people say no to reforms, no to the constituent assembly” or “Petro out. For impeachment”.

After presiding from a platform at the military parade on July 20, On Colombia’s Independence Day, to which he arrived late and was booed by the people, Petro installed the new session of the National Congress.
