Retired Army General Omar Halleslevens was “separated” by Ortega

The retired Army General and former Vice President of the Republic, Moisés Omar Halleslevens Acevedo, one of the most trusted and close men of the dictator Daniel Ortega, was “dismissed” from the office of the Vice President of the Republic, where, until the Last week, it had an office to deal with relations with private companies and producers.

According to sources familiar with the movements within Ortega’s circle of power, as of this week Halleslevens Acevedo will no longer hold the position of trust that had been assigned to him and has been placed “at the disposal of the president”, that is, for the moment he will not has charge.

Former Vice President Halleslevens is Minister-Delegate for Specific Affairsappointed by Ortega through Executive Decree No. 01-2017 published in La Gaceta, Official Gazette on Monday January 16 of 2017a charge invented by the dictator to keep close to his former guerrilla partner from the 70s.

Said position was never regulated by Law, for this reason its functions are unknown until now. The only thing that is presumed by the name Ortega gave him is that Halleslevens is a minister to act “specifically” where his boss sends him.

Although the “specific minister” appointment has not been cancelled, the source who spoke with Article 66on condition of anonymity, said that the former commander-in-chief of the Army is currently out of office, awaiting an “assignment from the president.”

Halleslevens is one of the Sandinista militants who make up the so-called “circle of power” of the dictatorship. He is a compatriot of Ortega since he was born in La Libertad, Chontales, just like the red and black caudillo.

He joined the Sandinista National Liberation Front in mid-1966. In December 1974 he joined the guerrilla commando that stormed the house of José María (Chema) castillo, to rescue Daniel Ortega from prison, who had been imprisoned for 7 years for having robbed a bank and killed a security guard.

In 1995, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Army, a position he left at the age of 5 because the Military Law so established. Between 2012 and 2017, he was vice president of the republic accompanying the dictator Ortega.

It is said that Halleslevens still maintains influence within the ranks of the Army, since there are still active former senior officers who worked with him and respect him, and that would be one of the reasons why Ortega keeps him close.

However, that “influence” would now be in doubt, as it is also in doubt whether the decision to remove him from the Vice-Presidency building is part of a weakening of presidential flattery with the military leadership, in part, the reason for the loyalty of the command with the Sandinista dictator.
