Retail trade sales in the country increased by 0.4% in October, compared to the previous month. The high, however, was much lower than that recorded in September, 1.2%.
Compared to October 2021, there was growth of 2.7%, the third consecutive positive result. The data are from the Monthly Survey of Commerce, released this Thursday (8) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
In the October versus September result, five of the eight surveyed activities were positive: furniture and home appliances; office, computer and communication equipment and supplies; other articles for personal and household use; fuels and lubricants; and hyper, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco.
With a negative result were pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles; fabrics, clothing and footwear; and books, newspapers, magazines and stationery.
The research manager, Cristiano Santos, explained that since 2020, Black Friday has been spraying, because companies began to anticipate promotions and discounts. This same situation was repeated in October, especially in furniture and appliances and office equipment and supplies.
For him, this behavior also has to do with a certain repositioning of these activities, which grew much less after the pandemic and adopted other discount strategies.
The researcher also said that in the activity of equipment and material for office, information technology and communication, there is a lot of influence from the dollar and that the appreciation of the real in October helped in the offers of these products.
In the expanded retail trade, which includes the activities of vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction material, the volume of sales in October varied by 0.5% compared to September and 0.3% against October 2021.
In the year, the sector accumulated an increase of 1.0%, and, in the last 12 months, it changed by 0.1%, the first result in the positive field in five months.
