Retail sales volume increased by 0.6% in July this year, compared to the previous month. The increase came after a 0.9% drop between May and June. The data from the Monthly Survey of Commerce (PMC) were released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) this Thursday (12).
Retail sales also showed increases compared to July last year (4.4%), in 2024 (5.1%) and in 12 months (3.7%). The 4.4% growth compared to July 2023 is the 14th consecutive increase in this type of comparison.
Between June and July this year, five of the eight activities surveyed showed an increase: office, IT and communication equipment and material (2.2%), other personal and household items (2.1%), fabrics, clothing and footwear (1.8%), hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (1.7%) and furniture and household appliances (1.4%).
Two segments fell from June to July this year: pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (-1.5%) and fuels and lubricants (-1.1%). The books, newspapers, magazines and stationery sector, on the other hand, saw a variation close to stability (0.1%).
Nominal retail revenue grew 0.9% compared to the previous month, 9.2% compared to July 2023, 8.4% year-to-date and 6.5% over 12 months.
Expanded retail
Expanded retail, which also includes construction materials and the sale of vehicles and auto parts, varied only 0.1% from June to July. Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces increased by 3.8% while Construction materials varied by -0.2%.
Expanded retail had growth rates of 7.2% compared to July 2023, 4.7% in the year to date and 3.8% in the 12-month period.
Nominal revenue in this segment grew 0.4% compared to June, 11.1% compared to July 2023, 7.4% year-to-date and 6.1% over 12 months.
