Respiratory diseases and Covid-19 cost ISSSTE 6,621 million pesos

Of that figure, 3,490.9 million pesos were allocated to the care of various respiratory diseases and 3,130.5 million to COVID-19, ISSSTE reports in its 2024 Financial and Actuarial Report.

Although the health emergency due to the pandemic was lifted in May of last year, infections are still present and their treatment is expensive if hospitalization is required.

And at ISSSTE, one in three beneficiaries is over 60 years of age, the population group most susceptible to becoming seriously ill and requiring hospitalization if infected with Covid-19.

Therefore, 91% of the expenditure on Covid (2,852.9 million pesos) corresponded to medical services for 41,000 hospitalizations and the rest (277.6 million) in 142,000 consultations.

Diseases with the highest cost in the ISSSTE

During 2023, the medical services that generated the greatest expenditure for the Institute were concentrated in 17 conditions, which together represented 46,628 million pesos.
