With the publication yesterday of the authorized budget calendar for the Ministry of the Interior, the budget reduction for the different instances in charge of immigration issues is confirmed.

In said document disclosed in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) shows a decrease in resources for the National Migration Institute (INM), the Coordination for the Comprehensive Attention of Migration on the Southern Border, the general coordination of the Mexican Commission for Aid to Refugees (Comar) and for the Immigration Policy, Registration and Identity of Persons. In addition, Budget Program E008 on Migration Policy and Services no longer appears.

In this way, the entities in charge of serving this population have a 54 percent reduction in their 2025 allocations.

For this year, 1,851,531,280 pesos were allocated together for INM, Comar, the Migration Policy Unit and Coordination for Comprehensive Migration Care on the Southern Border.

While last year 4 thousand 73 million 346 thousand 921 pesos were allocated, including the 2 thousand 11 million of the Budget Program E008 on Migration Policy and Services, which is not within the Government’s spending for 2025. It is a program that had the goal of ensure the interests of Mexicans abroad and protect the rights of foreigners in national territory.

Meanwhile, for the INM an amount of 1,700.1 million pesos was defined, which represents a decrease of 14 percent compared to the 1,897.7 million of the previous year. Comar goes from 51.2 million in 2024 to 47.8 million this year, that is, 10 percent less.

Also, the resources of the Coordination for Comprehensive Migration Attention on the Southern Border decrease from 65.4 million to 58.7 million, and those of the Migration Policy, Registration and Identity of Persons Unit decrease from 47.9 million to 44.7.

After a year in which record numbers of arrests of undocumented foreigners mainly from Central and South America were recorded in Mexico, a complex scenario in immigration matters is emerging with the beginning of Donald Trump’s new period as president of the United States.

Heading into his inauguration on January 20, the magnate has announced that he will carry out mass deportations, while at the same time he has asked that migratory flows of those seeking to reach that country be stopped from Mexico.
