Since 2013, Rigoberto Obando Flores has been mayor of the municipality of El Castillo, and the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE), controlled by the Daniel Ortega regime, appointed him for another new term by handing him his credentials this week as an “elected authority” along with Yadira Saballo Miranda as deputy mayor. What all the residents of this municipality are wondering is: Will it be that in this period he meets the tasks that he has pending?
Those who voted for him and those who did not, expect him to honor and fulfill the promises of improvements and development in the municipality.
Merchants from the community of Las Maravillas and Nueva Quezada, for example, experience the same difficulties in going out to buy basic grains and being able to sell what is produced in the area. They urge the mayor, “to put a hand” in the repair of the roads of the municipality.
Poor road conditions affect productivity
Juan Jerez, a vegetable vendor in the area, explains that the poor condition of the roads makes it difficult for him to sell his products. Not being able to access the communities with vegetables, he has to keep the products in central towns. This makes them more expensive, since he spends more time than expected to sell them.
He says that there have been times when his sale has been completely botched. Vegetable prices have increased considerably. A pound of potatoes is worth 40 córdobas, tomatoes are 10 córdobas a unit, carrots are priced at 20 córdobas for medium-sized ones and 30 for large ones. “They are already expensive, raising them more makes it impossible for me to sell them, I lose the product and return home with no money,” he complains.

In the opinion of the residents, the appointed mayor should begin with the problem of the roads. “It is a debt with the population, and since they have another opportunity, then they fulfill it. It is what we expect”, claimed another citizen.
