SANTO DOMINGO.- The residents of the Kennedy expansion, specifically in the area between John F. Kennedy and Ortega y Gasset avenues, are facing a crisis due to the prolonged shortage of drinking water, which has lasted for a week.
According to the Neighborhood Council of the Area, chaired by Cesar Valdez, the situation has forced many families to resort to purchasing bottles of water for chores, which has considerably increased their expenses. “We are spending more than we can, just on bottles of water,” he commented.
In addition to the bottles, some residents have chosen to hire people to carry water from the few cisterns in the area to supply themselves, which implies an even greater expense.
Valdez’s opinion was supported by Denni Almonte who said that he buys bottled water even to wash. “We have no other option, we have not had water for days and we must pay for the water that does not reach us,” he lamented.
So far, local authorities have not offered an explanation for the cause of the shortage or provided short-term solutions to alleviate the situation for residents of this busy area of Santo Domingo. Those affected hope for a prompt solution to the problem, since access to water is essential for daily well-being.
