Reservoir levels in Bogotá, slowed by lack of rain and little water saving

At the end of the 12th cycle of water rationing in Bogotá and surrounding municipalities, The level of the Chingaza system reservoirs is at 50.84%However, the filling trend is downwards due to the lack of rain in recent weeks.

According to Natasha Avendaño, manager of the Bogotá Water and Sewer Company (EAAB), to ‘City Noticias’, “The inflows in August have been well below the historical level. In general, in the three months in which rainfall was supposed to occur, which were June, July and August, we have not been close to 60 percent of the expected inflows.”

In addition to the above, although there is good performance in rationing, water consumption is above the established goal of 15 cubic meters per second, exceeding 17 cubic meters to date.

The water company has highlighted that “Since the beginning of this contingency, the EAAB has insisted that, together with the increase in rainfall expected in the reservoirs, it is important that we all save water to quickly get out of this crisis.”

That is why, aiming to promote the culture of savings, The EAAB issued a series of recommendations so that users can maintain this habit consistently. These include:

– Do not use the reserve tank on the day of the rationing shift.

– Use a glass to brush your teeth and turn off the tap when shaving, soaping or shampooing.

– Shower for a maximum of three minutes and collect the cold water from the shower in a bucket while it heats up.

– Use the washing machine with a full load.

– Avoid washing cars, facades and windows.

– Check that the seals on faucets, showers and pipes do not leak.

– Use rainwater for cleaning, flushing toilets or watering plants.

It is worth remembering that water rationing began last April, due to the critical situation of the reservoirs. In particular, those of Chuza and San Rafael, which are the ones that make up the Chingaza system.

With water cuts in effect, the Mayor’s Office of Bogotá expects that by October the capacity level of the reservoirs will reach 70%.
