Research on obstetric violence in Cuba recognized among the best in Latin America

Partos Rotos

MIAMI, United States. – The Global Network for Investigative Journalism recognized Broken Birthsan investigation carried out by five independent Cuban journalists as one of the best in Latin America during the past year.

The piece, which collects data on more than 500 births in Cuba, a country where many women have experienced forms of obstetric violence, or medical abuse during childbirth.

Reporters Isabel Echemendía, Claudia Padrón, Darcy Borrero and two other journalists living in Cuba portrayed the systematic way in which obstetric violence occurs in the country and why the Cuban authorities do not consider it a problem. During the investigation, the affected women told details of how their deliveries were.

The research also includes interviews with experts, feminist activists and health professionals.

Partos Rotos describes a system where the most common practices of obstetric violence are widespread. Many times the health personnel run over the delivery times, applying aggressive techniques that are being limited in other countries; or mistreats, infantilizes and blackmails women.

The Global Network of Investigative Journalism highlights that the work not only brings together the testimonies of the victims, but also necessary audio files, maps and infographics.

The result of the investigative effort of the reporters is the web partoscuba.info.

“Despite Broken Births It has generated a large amount of information on the subject, obstetric violence is a systemic problem that continues and more testimonies will appear that will update the reality of this phenomenon in Cuba. We hope that Broken Births contribute to the elimination of violence against women on the island,” said Isabel Echemendía, coordinator of the project, at the time.
