MIAMI, United States. – This Sunday, two ship captains, Argentines Guillermo Triguero and Alejandro Zecchin, rescued eight Cuban shipwrecks in the Gulf of Mexico, reported the Argentine media TN.

The Cuban rafters They were part of a group of 20 people who left the island in a boat last Friday with the hope of landing on the shores of the United States. So far, 12 of them are still missing in the area.

The two Argentine boat captains had launched a recreational trip on the Island Gird boat, this Sunday, with the intention of going from the Gulf of Mexico to the Bahamas. In the middle of the journey they heard voices and managed to rescue eight Cuban castaways.

“We heard some screaming. We began to search the area and we boarded eight Cubans. They were adrift,” Triguero told TN William.

When they began to hear the screams, around 6:00 in the morning, the two navigators decided to lower the engines and reduce the noise.

“Suddenly, we heard voices, but we didn’t see them in the water. We found one and started scouring the area. They were all scattered, about a kilometer around. We boarded eight Cubans and immediately notified the Coast Guard to start with the corresponding protocols,” explained Guillermo.

According to the report of TNall those rescued are men: two in their 60s and the other six in their 30s.

“The two older people were more committed, but as reported, they are already well. Anything could have happened, be it death from hypothermia, because they were there in the sea for more than 10 hours, or even sharks appeared”, the ship captain also detailed.

Once the two Argentine sailors alerted the Coast Guard, three ships arrived where the Cubans were transferred. After the transshipment, Coast Guard agents launched an operation to find the rest of the rafters.

The eight rescued Cubans, for their part, would have expressed their gratitude to the Argentine sailors. “They no longer cared about reaching the United States; they wanted to be saved. So we sorted them out, gave them water and put the vests on them. We understood the euphoria of being saved, but we had to activate the protocol because we did not know who were the ones who were getting on the ship”, Guillermo also explained.
