The claim of the main rural unions that was ignored by the government
Due to the “delicate economic situation facing agricultural products,” a request was made to postpone the payment due date to BPS.
The Rural Federation issued a statement on Wednesday in which it called on the government to fail to comply with a request made by several agricultural sector unions.
In the statement, one of the country’s main producer associations states that it has asked the government for “an extension on the payment deadline of the Social Security Bank (BPS), due to the “delicate economic and financial situation faced by the majority of agricultural producers.”
“However, despite the importance of the request and the reality raised by the unions, the authorities chose to ignore the request, without providing a response or showing willingness to understand the needs of the sector,” the statement concludes.
According to the Rural Federation, the request made to the Executive Branch was made jointly by various rural associations: the Association of Rice Growers (ACA), the National Association of Milk Producers (ANPL), the Rural Association of Uruguay (ARU), the Federated Agrarian Cooperatives (CAF) and the National Commission for Rural Development (CNFR).
The Rural Federation and the unions linked to agricultural production are those that have made the most complaints about the exchange rate and the price of the dollar in recent months. In any case, the US currency has appreciated in 2024, going from being in the $37 range to closing this Tuesday, for example, at $40.4.
