This Tuesday afternoon, members of the Buenos Aires City Police repressed people who had approached the Buenos Aires Obelisk to celebrate the victory of the Argentine soccer team against Croatia, which was repudiated by officials and human rights leaders.
Families and groups of friends approached the Obelisk to celebrate the victory of the National Team and agents of the Buenos Aires police advanced on a group of people who had climbed the fences that the local government had installed in the area, where at least one person was apprehended.
Given what happened, the Nation’s Secretary of Human Rights, Horacio Pietragalla Corti, and other leaders of the Frente de Todos rejected the repression against those who went to “celebrate at the obelisk.”
“We ask the head of government, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, that the Buenos Aires city police stop repressing and provoking the Argentines who went as a family to celebrate the triumph of Argentina at the Obelisk,” Pietragalla Corti wrote in your Twitter account.
And he added that “celebrating a sporting victory for the national team is also a right for everyone.”
“We will make judicial presentations to guarantee the celebration and find those responsible for the police violence carried out by the city police,” the secretary completed.

Meanwhile, the Coordinator against Police and Institutional Repression (Correpi) also repudiated “the repression at the Obelisk during the celebrations for the victory of the national team.”
“Once again, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta and the entire rancid right prove to be so anti-people that they need to repress any popular joy,” they said on the same social network.

For her part, Buenos Aires legislator Claudia Neira pointed out that “Rodríguez Larreta has to set a limit right now. People went to celebrate and are at risk.” She also described the action of the Ministry of Security in charge of the City Police as “very serious and irresponsible.” And she stressed: “Fences, repression, arrests. Incredible.”
The Head of Government @horaciolarreta You have to set a limit right now. People went to celebrate and are at risk.

Buenos Aires deputy Victoria Montenegro shared a screenshot of the C5N channel broadcasting the incidents and said: “Do you understand that Larreta represses the celebrations for being World Cup finalists?? They hate the Argentine people.”
Likewise, Buenos Aires senator María Teresa García questioned the presence of the Buenos Aires Minister of Security, Marcelo D’Alessandro, and assured: “This town deserves a bit of joy, and you think of fencing it?”.
Where is Dalessandro???@horaciolarreta they are repressing, where are you, where is your security minister.

“The City Police are not there to suppress the fans, or to spy on politicians, or to act as VIP custody of your friends. They are there to take care of the people. They stop repressing the Obelisk and go looking for it to Arshak,” said national deputy Leandro Santoro, referring to the Buenos Aires police officer Arshak Karhanyan who disappeared in April 2019.
Hello @horaciolarreta the @police_city It is not there to suppress the fans, or to spy on politicians, or to act as VIP custody of your friends. It is to take care of people.
Stop repressing the obelisk and go find Arshak.— Leandro Santoro (@SantoroLeandro) December 13, 2022
City Police sources told Télam that “The City always puts a fence on Corrientes so that the festivities do not end up affecting the merchants, the theaters, the restaurants. It happened historically in the festivities, for example, of the River, of Racing and of the National Team and it can be reached to the Obelisk along 9 de Julio avenue and all the parallel ones to Corrientes”.
They added that the problem was generated “by some who were throwing stones”, but downplayed the incident, for which there were also some detainees.
