Republican businessman Perry Johnson announced his candidacy for the presidency. He tried to run for governor of Michigan last year, but the state elections office found that he had submitted thousands of fraudulent nomination signatures.
On Thursday night Johnson announced his candidacy for the White House to a group of supporters. Hours earlier, he had spoken on the opening day of the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, which is held outside Washington, DC.
Johnson did not directly mention his presidential campaign when he spoke at the CPAC meeting in Oxon Hill, Maryland, where a handful of candidates and potential contenders, including former President Donald Trump, will speak Friday through Saturday.
The businessman made a fortune starting Michigan-based Perry Johnson Registrars Inc., which certifies whether companies meet industry standards.
He was considered a top Republican candidate for Michigan governor in 2022 before he and four other Republican hopefuls were disqualified due to those invalid signatures.
