MIAMI, United States. – Representatives of the governments of Cuba and the United States will meet this Wednesday in Washington DC to hold a new round of talks on migration issues, reported this Tuesday the AFP agency, which had contact with a State Department spokesman.
“On April 12, officials from the United States and Cuba are scheduled to meet in Washington to discuss the implementation of the migration agreements,” said the official, who asked the news agency to remain anonymous.
In addition, he added that the meeting would be a continuation of a commitment with Cuba “in migration matters as neighboring States and is limited to the issue of migration.”
From April 2022Cuba and the United States have held biannual meetings to discuss migration issues. The meeting on Wednesday “reflects the commitment of both countries to periodically review the implementation of the agreements” reached in 1984, according to the State Department spokesman.
For the United States, it is essential to “guarantee safe, orderly, humane, and regular migration,” as well as “to encourage family reunification and promote greater respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Cuba,” the source said.
In April 2022, U.S. and Cuban regime officials met in Washington D.C.for the first time since 2018, to discuss the implementation of the Migration Agreements between the northern nation and the Island.
Then, in November of the same year, officials from both countries met in Havana for the same purpose. However, on that occasion transcended that the US delegation had advocated for the release of all political prisoners on the island.
A State Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity told the agency Associated Press (AP) that the delegation from Washington referred to its concerns about human rights in Cuba.
The source stated that, at the meeting, Rena Bitter, US Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, “urged the Cuban government to unconditionally release all political prisoners.”
