The murder of journalist Fernando Núñezafter an ambush in Libertad, generated indignation not only from the journalistic union of our country, but also from international organizations such as Reporters Without Borders condemning the attack and demanding that the authorities identify those materially and intellectually responsible for the crime.
The director of RSF in Latin America, Artur Romeu, considered that it was a targeted attack and that, unfortunately, it is not an isolated incident. To this end, he recalled that this year alone two other journalists were murdered, which places us in an “absolutely unprecedented situation in the country.”

“We demand that President José Jerí and his government send a clear and unequivocal signal that violence against the press will not be tolerated. We also call on the Public Ministry to guarantee a rapid, rigorous and transparent investigation, which considers the victim’s journalistic work as a possible motive and allows the identification of both the material authors and the intellectual authors,” he said.
Furthermore, Reporters Without Borders highlights that the three murders perpetrated against journalists in 2025 occur in a context of deterioration in press freedom: Peru has fallen 53 positions in the World Press Freedom Classification since 2022.
“In the north of the country in particular, the worsening of security conditions, combined with the expansion of organized crime, exposes journalists who cover crime, corruption and abuses of power to constant threats, in a context of persistent impunity,” they maintain.
