Reporters Without Borders (RSF) calls for the full release of journalist Roland Carreño, leader of Voluntad Popular who served two years in detention on October 26. The organization points out that the case appears to be a punishment for Carreño’s closeness to opposition political leader Leopoldo López, national coordinator of Voluntad Popular, once he fled to Spain.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) advocates for the full freedom of the journalist Roland Carrenoleader of Voluntad Popular who served two years in detention on October 26.
The organization regretted, this Thursday, October 27, that Carreño’s trial “continues to be involved in the procedural delay and in decisions that undermine his right to defense, as established by Venezuelan law.”
RSF demanded that, if the trial continues, Roland Carreño must have the guarantees of due process.

“After five months of hearings and when the culminating stage of the process was underway, the judge handling the Carreño case requested his dismissal, alleging medical reasons. In this way, the trial will have to restart completely. RSF condemns this fact, which is part of a delay strategy to keep Carreño detained”.
For the international organization, the case of Roland Carrreño seems like a punishment “for his closeness to the opposition political leader Leopold Lopez, national coordinator of Voluntad Popular, once he fled to Spain».
Likewise, RSF recalled that Carreño, arrested in 2020, is charged with the crimes of financing terrorism, criminal association, conspiracy against political form, money laundering and illicit trafficking in weapons of war.

“His lawyers warn that Carreño was forced to record a video to indict himself, a video that the official media later went viral to disqualify him, they also maintain that the Prosecutor’s Office has not presented evidence of these alleged crimes,” the organization said.
