Report of fire at the Cardón Refinery of the Paraguaná Refining Complex

The PDVSA fire department went to the Cardón refinery to contain the spread of a fire in the Paraguaná Refining Complex. The authorities have not offered any statement and at the moment the causes of the incident are unknown.

On the night of this Monday, December 26, a large-scale fire was recorded at the Cardón Refinery of the Paraguaná Refining Complex, in the state of Falcón, one of the most important oil facilities in the country.

This information was disclosed by various journalists through social networks, based on various videos and photographs provided by residents of the area. The audiovisual material shows a refining tower expelling fire, while flames spread on the ground around the infrastructure.

The journalist Jhorman Cruz published that the causes of the fire are unknown, at the moment, and that some pronouncement is expected from the authorities.

“They report a fire at the Cardón Refinery of the Paraguaná Refining Complex, in Falcón state. For the moment, there is no further information. Some official pronouncement is expected. The images are taken by the inhabitants of the area, this December 26”, indicates a Twitter post.

On the other hand, the communicator Dereck Blanco contributed that reports indicate that the fire department of Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) is already in the facilities trying to contain the fire. The video posted in this tweet shows a fire truck shooting water into the flames.

The problems in Cardón are not new. Different plants of this complex have been deactivated and reactivated over the months due to the deterioration they present due to the lack of investment from the State.

It is due to this inconsistency that the production of gasoline is irregular, since the complex produces some 28,000 barrels per day of the almost 200,000 that it refined a decade ago.

The gasoline processing plant was reactivated just two weeks agoafter the technicians managed to start up both the catalytic plant and the reformer, which had been out of operation for a week.
