Starting next Monday, an inter-institutional group will begin the process of comprehensive repair of the damage to the victims of the derailment of the Interoceanic Train, which occurred on December 28, reported President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
He said that he requested an international certification and guaranteed that passenger service will not be resumed until the recommendations derived from it are applied. “Have a greater guarantee for non-repetition,” he said.
“Once the roads are freed and it is determined that they are in good condition, cargo transportation may use them under certain mechanisms, but passenger transportation, until the certification comes and the recommendations are carried out, so that the probability of there being another accident is minimal,” he stressed.
Yesterday morning, the president highlighted that the train drivers “are experienced,” but the Rail Transport Regulatory Agency must determine “the causes of why there was no control over excessive speed.”
Starting Monday, under the coordination of the Ministry of the Interior, the Executive Commission for Attention to Victims (CEAV) and the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) will go to the communities of those affected – in Oaxaca and Veracruz, above all – to begin the procedure.
“We have the names and we have been in communication with all those who traveled on the train and with the relatives of those who unfortunately lost their lives,” Sheinbaum said.
The repair will be for 225 people, the universe of those who were on the railway when the derailment occurred, leaving 14 passengers dead and 98 injured.
He stressed that the FGR has accepted that this process be carried out as soon as possible, and it is “one of the alternative solutions for justice that victims or family members have to accept.” He specified that the support is not only financial, it also has to do with housing, scholarships for children and schools.
If they agree with the comprehensive repair, “they will receive the part that corresponds to the insurer, and according to what the FGR determines, support will be established for each one”, for which the amounts will be differentiated.
Meanwhile, he added, “there is a public servant who is watching over each of the families that were in a hospital” – currently only one passenger remains in the “20 de Noviembre.”
For the protection of the people, they will not disclose the reparation amounts, “but each person has to accept it or continue with the process,” added the President.
The Undersecretary of Human Rights, Population and Migration of the Interior, Arturo Medina, explained that since Monday they began contacting each of the victims or their relatives to give them an appointment and begin comprehensive reparation.
He specified that “each of the victims will be accompanied by a legal advisor from the CEAV and by personnel from the FGR and the Dispute Resolution Mechanism of the Ministry of the Interior to address all their doubts and concerns,” in addition to being made the proposal from the insurer.
“They have begun to be summoned by telephone and the attention will be in their communities,” in addition to “we will eliminate unnecessary procedures,” so one that regularly takes six months, “we will do it as soon as possible,” Medina said.
