Renowned graphic designer Rafael Morante dies in Havana

Madrid Spain.- The designer, publicist and illustrator Rafael Morante Boyerizo died in Havana this Sunday at the age of 90.

The News was released by the Ministry of Culture and the Cuban Book Institute, who lamented the death of the 2015 National Design Award.

Rafael Morante was born in Madrid in 1931 and at the age of nine he moved with his family to Cuba due to the Spanish Civil War.

He graduated from the Professional School of Advertising and his career was closely linked to Cuban graphics, which includes the creation of collections, logos, covers and a large number of illustrations.

He was one of the founders of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), the Higher Institute of Industrial Design (ISDi) and the Cuban Book Institute (ICL).

designed the Cuban Cinema Magazine and was the artistic director of the Cuba Magazinefrom Editorial Social Sciences.

Together with designers such as Eduardo Muñoz Bachs and Eladio Rivadulla, he participated in the design and reproduction of ICAIC’s first screen-printed movie posters.

Morante also ventured into literature with the novels Love over here from the stars, which won the David Prize for Science Fiction in 1984; Y banished in time (1990), among other publications.

In July 2017, the collection of some 3,000 Cuban movie posters belonging to ICAIC was registered in the National Register of the UNESCO Memory of the World Program. The collection included some Morante posters.

In addition to the National Design Award, his work was recognized with other awards such as the Casa de las Américas Book Design Award at Harvard University (1966); the Book Design Award, Oxford (1966); and the Raúl Martínez Award for Book Design (2001).
