CDMX launches plaques for the 2026 World Cup
The commemorative plaques for the 2026 World Cup in CDMX do not imply a general or mandatory replacement; They are a completely voluntary option, designed for those who wish to acquire them for pleasure.
They are distinguished by their exclusive limited edition design and by incorporating state-of-the-art security elements, equal to or superior to those of a traditional plate. They are official and valid for circulation, not just a souvenir, and allow you to carry a unique badge from the most important soccer tournament in the world.
According to the official statement are available for private cars with current license plates, as well as for new, semi-new or vehicles from other states without debts. They do not apply to motorcycles.
The procedure costs 1,500 pesos, with no registration or cancellation fee. Those who plate for the first time can choose between the traditional or the commemorative plate, both with the same legal validity.
Purchase is enabled in January 2026 and delivery begins in February, in Semovi and Treasury modules, with same-day delivery times up to three days. This is a limited edition of 60 thousand plates.

Mandatory replacement in Edomex: dates and requirements
The State of Mexico will apply mandatory replacement in 2026 for private service vehicles whose license plates were issued in 2021, according to the calendar published by the Ministry of Finance in the Official Gazette of December 19 .
The procedure must be carried out according to the last digit of the license plate:
-1 and 2: April
-3 and 4: May
-5 and 6: June
-7 and 8: July
-9 and 0: August

In the case of plates issued between September and December 2021, they retain the validity indicated on the registration card; Once expired, replacement must be done within the following 15 business days, or in advance following the previous calendar.
The objective is to update and purify the vehicle registry, strengthen vehicle identification and support public safety tasks.
The costs of the procedure will be those in force established by the Edomex Finance Secretariat for 2026, which will be announced on official channels.
In summary, while in CDMX the change of plates for the 2026 World Cup is optional and responds only to the taste of motorists, in the State of Mexico the replacement will be mandatory for certain vehicles and must be carried out on the established dates.
