Remo Carlotto, Argentina’s international representative on human rights issues, will take office on Wednesday as Executive Secretary of the Mercorur Institute for Public Policies on Human Rights (IPPDH), replacing Ariela Peralta, who is concluding her term, the agency reported.
The Executive Secretariat is the position of institutional representation of the IPPDH, “responsible for the fulfillment of the tasks attributed to the Institute and for its technical, administrative, financial and patrimonial management,” it was indicated.
The position is held by a national of one of the member states of the bloc, appointed by the Common Market Council (CMC) for a period of two years, at the proposal of the Meeting of High Authorities on Human Rights of Mercosur (RAADH) “following the criteria of rotation of nationalities in alphabetical order”.
In a statement it was indicated that Peralta, a Uruguayan national, began his term in February 2020, and that Carlotto “was proposed by the Government of the Argentine Nation.”
The IPPDH was created in 2009 by Decision of the Common Market Council (CMC), “in order to contribute to the strengthening of the Rule of Law of the States Parties of the regional bloc, as well as the consolidation of human rights as a fundamental axis of the identity and development of Mercosur, and has its headquarters in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires”.
