On the date that marks three years of the murder of Congolese Moïse Kabagambe, this Friday (24), a joint action guaranteed the free exhumation and preservation of the refugee’s remains. Moïse was brutally killed at the age of 24, in a kiosk on the edge of Barra da Tijuca beach,
The measure was articulated by the president of the Commission for the Defense of Human Rights and Citizenship of the Legislative Assembly of Rio (Alerj), deputy Dani Monteiro, together with the Center for the Defense of Human Rights of the Public Defender’s Office of Rio de Janeiro, to the State Intersectoral Policy Committee of Attention to Refugees and Migrants. The measure was met by both the Municipal Department of Conservation (Seconserva) and the funeral service concessionaire Rio Pax, which guaranteed the service free of charge.
The exhumation and preservation of Moïse’s remains ensures that the family can fulfill their cultural and religious rituals, preventing the body from being sent to the public ossuary, which would be a violation of their rights. The joint action demonstrates the public authorities’ commitment to combating human rights violations and reinforcing the fight against structural racism and social exclusion.
In 2024, Moïse rreceived the highest honor from the state of Rio, the post-mortem Tiradentes Medal, awarded by Alerj.
