MADRID, Spain.- The renowned former pitcher of Granma and the Cuban national team, Ciro Silvino Licea, was released from the US detention center where he had been held for days after crossing the Rio Grande through the Mexican town of Piedras Negras. The news was confirmed on Monday Full Swing by Licea’s brother-in-law.
According to information from the sports media, the process for the 46-year-old former athlete took longer than usual because the reunion with a close member of his family was missing.
As specified Full SwingLicea will settle in the city of Houston, in the state of Texas, where part of his family lives, including his wife.
In the middle of last September Ciro Silvino Licea he left from the Island through the José Martí International Airport, heading for Nicaragua, from there to embark on the usual migratory route to the United States.
The former athlete, who was the pitching coach of Alazanes de Granma at the time of his departure, was called to be the main pitching coach of the Agricultores team in the I Cuban Baseball Elite League, which began on October 22.
A native of Bayamo, Ciro Silvino Licea served as coach of the Cuba team in the last edition of the World Baseball Classic.
During his active stage he participated in 23 National Series, with an ERA of 3.70. Known as the Indian of the Date, he accumulated 208 wins with 3,067.1 innings and 1,887 strikeouts.
With the Cuba Team, he competed, among others, in the Winnipeg 1999 Pan American Games, in the 2001 Chinese Taipei World Championship and in the 2009 World Classic.
