Relatives who protested at the Cathedral: “They are our children and they are unjustly imprisoned”

Familia, 11J

MIAMI, United States. — Several relatives of political prisoners protested last August 1st in front of the Havana Cathedral to demand the release of their loved ones, mostly protesters of July 11, 2021 (J11).

They are Liset Fonseca Rosales, Marta Perdomo Benítez, Ailex Marcano Fabelo, Delanis Álvarez Matos, Saily Núñez and Wilber Aguilar, who, after being arrested, were transferred to the police unit of Cuba and Chacón.

Some of them reported to CubaNet what was experienced during that protest, originally planned for the Havana Capitol.

“It was inevitable to ask for justice, to ask for freedom for our children. And when we left the church we also did it with that devotion and with that clamor that came from our hearts, from our souls,” said Ailex Marcano, mother of political prisoner Ángel Jesús Véliz.

After the arrest, the relatives were detained and subjected to several hours of interrogation by State Security.

“We were aware of what awaited us, but the motive that drove us was even stronger. They are our children and they are unjustly imprisoned,” Wilber Aguilar Bravo, father of Walnier Aguilar, a young man sentenced to 12 years in prison, told CubaNet.

Delanis Álvarez, wife of Duniesky Ruiz, pointed out that once at the police station all the relatives of the prisoners were taken to a room. There they took their names and asked them why they were demonstrating.

“We told them that we all had the same pain, because what they had done to us was an injustice,” Álvarez declared.

“Then they put us in a cell and told us that we were under an investigative process,” added the woman.
