Relatives warn that political prisoner Evelyn Pinto urgently needs specialized medical care

Relatives of political prisoner Evelyn Pinto, 63, They denounced this Friday, October 14, that the area of conscience has not received a complete medical control checkup for almost a year, which includes specialized tests, since she is a cancer survivor and suffers from hypertension and chronic kidney failure.

“His condition of chronic kidney failure is a silent bomb, since your kidneys may be suffering irreversible damage. This affects us as a family and has us extremely concerned; We demand specialized medical attention and the performance of specialized exams,” urged Silvia Nadine Gutiérrez, Pinto’s daughter.

He specified that his mother —a well-known defender of the rights of children and adolescents in Nicaragua— needs specialized medical check-ups at least every two or three months.

Gutierrez explained that his mother was imprisoned on November 6, 2021 and has only been checked once since then, last March, by an internal medicine doctor who recommended exams to control the diseases; however, six and a half months after the medical order, these have not been carried out or authorized in the Esperanza prison.

He denounced that Pinto has presented muscle ailments, cramps, hypertensive crises, covid-19 symptoms, which have not been verified because they have not been tested, respiratory tract infections and various allergies.

The family has offered different ways for the tests to be carried out, and to pay for or pay for them, but there is no response from the prison. Keeping her and her family unaware of her health situation is a torture that we experience every day, denying her human right to decent health. We consulted each ailment with the doctor who treated her before being detained, but we go blindly,” Gutiérrez lamented.

Demand immediate release

Pinto is currently in the Women’s Penitentiary System, known as La Esperanza. She was sentenced to eight years in prison for allegedly committing the crime of “conspiracy to undermine national integrity and spread false news.”

The family of the political prisoner has rejected the Ortega accusations, highlighting that “The trial was illegal, without evidence and based on the testimonies of police officers who contradicted each other.”

MWe stand by our demand for your immediate and unconditional release. This health condition of my mother; She is also lived by several political prisoners, older adults and those with chronic diseases, ”said Pinto’s daughter.

The human rights defenders of the Nicaraguan Human Rights Collective Never Again accompanied Gutiérrez in her complaint about the lack of specialized medical care for her mother and also advocated respect for the rights of the conscientious person, especially the right to health, which is currently being violated.

The regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo keeps more than 200 people imprisoned for political reasons in the country. Among the detained citizens are peasants, human rights defenders, journalists, businessmen, presidential hopefuls and students. National and international human rights organizations have urged the release of all prisoners of conscience, denouncing that they suffer mistreatment, torture and serious violations of their human rights.
