Provea stressed that the relatives were told that the Sebin will be in charge of the custody of those arrested in post-election protests in Tocuyito, Carabobo state. It is estimated that at least 230 people were transferred from the states of Lara, Táchira and Trujillo. Men detained in the Capital District and La Guaira were already in that place.
The Venezuelan Program for Education-Action in Human Rights (Provea) reported that the relatives of hundreds of people arrested in protests were prohibited this Tuesday, the 27th, from delivering belongings and food, after their transfer to the Training Center for the New Man “El Libertador”, located in Tocuyito, Carabobo state.
The order, according to the complaints received, comes from the Ministry of Penitentiary Services, headed by Julio García Zerpa. At least 230 people were transferred to that prison, including young people detained in the states of Lara, Táchira, Trujillo and from various parts of Carabobo. Men detained in the Capital District and La Guaira had already been transferred to that place.
In a publication On social media, Provea highlighted that the relatives were told that the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) will be in charge of the custody of these prisoners in “Hombre Nuevo El Libertador.”
In addition, the prisoners transferred 20 days ago to that prison “were transferred yesterday at 6:00 am to an adjacent facility to make room for the recent detainees who will be transferred from different areas of the country.” A relative confirmed their transfer to the Carabobo Judicial Internment Center, better known as the Tocuyito prison.
The Tocuyito prison is being reconditioned by order of the ruler Nicolás Maduro since last August 10, who demanded that all those detained in the post-election protests be taken to that place and to Tocorón, in the state of Aragua.
These two prisons were taken last year as part of Operation Cacique Guaicaipuro, to dismantle the pranato structure in those places. On Monday 26th, at least 300 people were transferred from Yare III prison, in Miranda state, to Tocorón.
According to the authorities, 2,229 people have been arrested and 27 killed in the context of protests against the results of the July 28 presidential election, in which the National Electoral Council declared Nicolás Maduro the winner. As of August 23, independent NGOs have verified the arrest of 1,674 people for political reasons, including 107 teenagers.
