Relatives of political prisoners were attacked at the UCV during mass for new saints

Relatives of political prisoners affirm that they will continue to ask for freedom, justice and truth. Likewise, they requested protection from Pope Leo XIV and described the attack during the mass as an attack against spirituality.

The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (Clippve) reported that relatives of political prisoners were attacked this Saturday, October 25, during a mass held at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) to give thanks for the canonization of saints José Gregorio Hernández and Carmen Rendiles.

“A group of people identified with t-shirts alluding to José Gregorio – belonging to pro-government paramilitary groups – physically and verbally attacked relatives of political prisoners and faithful who attended the event with faith and hope,” the NGO stated in its account of

The relatives of the political prisoners indicated that the attackers who were dressed in outfits of the new Venezuelan saints “hit, pushed, insulted and snatched belongings” from those who joined the mass to pray for the health, freedom and rights of those who remain unjustly detained in the country.

They also condemned that the parrot carried by Rafael Araujo, who always protests with a message on one of these, “was broken with malice and contempt.”

Clippve stated that the new attack against relatives of prisoners for political reasons “represents a new attack on spirituality, plurality and humanist values” that they say José Gregorio Hernández embodied.

In addition to the attacks, those attending the mass pointed out that there were “State intelligence personnel photographing and recording the congregated faithful, in a clear intimidating action.”

Despite the intimidation, the relatives of the detainees affirmed that they will continue to demand freedom, justice and truth. “We will continue crying out to the Venezuelan saints so that the darkness that governs Venezuela may be transformed by the light of their spirit of good.” Likewise, they asked Pope Leo XIV for protection.
