The Committee of Mothers in Defense of the Truth claimed that the Prosecutor’s Office itself does not have clarity about the criminal cases being pursued against the adolescents. They also demand that prosecutor Tarek William Saab fulfill the promise of releases he made on November 12
The relatives of adolescents and adults detained for the post-election protests requested this Monday that Nicolás Maduro and the Prosecutor’s Office release them immediately and respect due process.
At a vigil in front of the Public Ministryand closely followed by officials from the PNB and the National Guard, the relatives read a letter in which they expressed their disagreement with the actions of prosecutor Tarek William Saab, with whom they held a meeting on November 12 in which he promised the release of the group of adolescents in Caracas, as well as the review of other cases.
Theany Urbina, on behalf of the “Mothers in Defense of Truth,” told the prosecutor to “look for the real culprits, look for the real culprits because these children are innocent. “It is more of a crime to put on paper that my son was at a protest when he was arrested in the morning near his house.”
His son Miguel, who turned 17 in a child care unit in El Cementerio, west of Caracas, has expressed intentions of committing suicide on several occasions. He has told him that he is not willing to be detained for 10 years for crimes he did not commit.
Dionexys García, sister of Diomer Gómez, also expressed that “we no longer want promises to review files, she knows that they are innocent. “Just as they arrested two thousand innocent people, they can free them.”
He assured that they are afraid of any retaliation, but he will not stop asking for the immediate release of his brother. «Sometimes I have nightmares, I wake up at dawn wondering if they will release him. You wonder if you are going to visit or work, if you are going to file a complaint or work. “It’s overwhelming.”
The Committee of Mothers in Defense of Truth also assured that they have no political intentions or are involved in conspiracies. They also claimed that the Prosecutor’s Office itself does not have clarity about the criminal cases being pursued.
«It is so absurd that the same prosecutor has asked me which case my brother belongs to. The Public Ministry itself asked me how the case is going when they are the ones accusing. Diomer has had two trial hearings and so far they don’t have even the first piece of evidence, nothing,” said Dionexys García.
In the same situation are teenagers Mariana González (16) and Cristian Pérez (17), both detained in Valencia, Carabobo state, and accused of allegedly attacking the Paramacay fort. In their cases they have already had three trial hearings, where the Prosecutor’s Office has also failed to present any evidence of the acts of terrorism, incitement to hatred or obstruction of public roads for which they are accused.
«They told us that the investigations were for 45 days and four months have already passed. It’s not fair. “He is a teenager who served 17 years in prison, he had never suffered panic attacks,” said Cristian’s mother, Patricia Rivas.
Yennifer Febres, Mariana’s mother, insisted that prosecutor Saab fulfill his promise of November 12, where he guaranteed her release. He indicated that calls to keep track of Mariana are not enough.
«I want them to act, I want them to give my daughter freedom, I want her to be seen by specialist doctors. My daughter is sick, at the last trial hearing she fainted, she asked the judge for mercy, to give her a precautionary measure because she did not want to return to that hell she is experiencing (…) She has already written me many letters saying again that He wants to take his life and that’s what I fear. Check the files of this girl and all the teenagers, they are innocent.
