Relatives of a Nicaraguan drowned in the Rio Grande request help for repatriation

The family of Nicaraguan Elvin Enoc Gudiel, 29, who drowned on the morning of December 14 after being swept away by the waters of the Rio Grande that separates the US-Mexico border, is requesting help to repatriate the body to Nicaragua.

According to information published by the organization Texas Nicaraguan Community (TNC), the young man’s body was found in a Morgue in the State of Tabasco. They presume that he fell from one of the boats that transports immigrants, leaving Tabasco for the Gulf. The family needs at least $3,800 to cover repatriation and funeral expenses.

Gudiel was originally from the municipality of San Lorenzo, in Boaco, and had left Nicaragua about a week ago. The organization reported that the young man’s mother had lost communication with her son since December 12 when she was on her way to Veracruz, after which she did not hear anything else.

TNC has requested collaboration from the authorities in that area to be able to find out in detail about the situation and to be able to support the repatriation. The death of the young man was announced on social networks and through the local media.

Currently, the number of Nicaraguan migrants who die on their way to the United States continues to increase. There are many who have perished by drowning, others in traffic accidents in Mexico or are killed by criminals.

This past December 13, the remains of Carlos Marconi Antón Catín, 34, another citizen who died trying to reach the United States in search of better job opportunities, arrived in Nicaragua. Antón was shot and burned by Mexican criminals in the city of Chahuites, in Oaxaca, Mexico.

To achieve repatriation, the young man’s relatives made a collection to collect five thousand dollars for the procedures. The tragedy occurred on November 5, when Carlos Antón Catín went “to earn some money selling bread and coffee in the streets to continue his journey and never returned” to the place where he was temporarily living.
