Relatives ask not to forget Colombians who are still detained in Venezuela

Relatives emphasize that they will continue fighting so that “all Colombians unjustly detained in Venezuela regain their freedom. The Foreign Minister of Colombia, Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio, announced a meeting with her Venezuelan counterpart

The Nation

Nubia Misse, a relative of one of the 17 Colombians released by Venezuela on October 24, asks President Gustavo Petro and Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio not to forget that there are still 20 Colombians detained.

“We want them back home. Just as we already enjoy the return of our relatives, we want the rest of the boys who are in Rodeo I and III to continue returning,” emphasized the one who was able to hug his brother, David Misse, released 15 days ago at the Atanasio Girardot International Bridge, after being deprived of his freedom for more than a year.

David, a motorcycle taxi driver from La Parada, was arrested on September 22, 2024 in Peracal, when he was providing transportation service to a Peruvian with US residency. He lasted 13 months and two days in jail. He was part of the group of 17 Colombians and one Ecuadorian recently released.

Nubia Misse stressed that she will continue fighting so that “all Colombians unjustly detained in Venezuela regain their freedom. It doesn’t matter that I already have mine at home, I continue working, because we are all one family.”

Misse, along with other citizens, has been demanding the freedom of the large group of Colombians for more than a year: “I will not stop the fight until everyone is home. Please, do not forget about those who are still detained in Venezuela.”

Statement from the summit

The Foreign Minister of Colombia, Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio, announced that she planned to meet on Sunday, November 9, with her Venezuelan counterpart, Iván Gil, to advance the case of the group of Colombians who remain detained in Venezuela.

He recalled that last Friday, October 24, the release of 18 citizens was achieved on the Atanasio Girardot International Bridge: 17 Colombians and one Ecuadorian; process that was led by her and the ambassador of the coffee-growing nation in Venezuela, Milton Rengifo.

Foreign Minister Villavicencio does not rule out that the number of detainees could be greater than 20, since she has received information that other Colombians could be unjustly imprisoned in other prisons in Venezuela.

The meeting between Villavicencio and Gil would take place within the framework of the summit between the European Union and CELAC (the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States), in Santa Marta, Colombia, where 12 heads of state, 6 vice presidents and 23 foreign ministers are expected to participate.
