In 2022, 428 Uruguayans lost their lives in traffic accidents and 230 were on national routes. 25,100 had injuries of different entities.
In total, last year, 16,700 spirometer controls were performed and 1,000 had a positive result.
“The Highway Police is in charge of educating, controlling and preventing traffic accidents on the road and it is a reality that even those who do not comply with current regulations and drive with alcohol in their blood, in breach of the regulations, indicated the deputy from Colonia, Nibia Reisch ( Citizens).
“For us, the control of the Highway Police in the control of the routes is essential. Not only that they are stationed with their mobiles on the routes, but that they carry out spirometry controls to detect alcohol and also marijuana control, ”explained the red legislator
The deputy made a request for reports to the National Directorate of Roads to learn first-hand about the controls that are being carried out in the country and in Colonia and to be able to analyze the accident rate map in order to advance in public policies to reverse this situation.
The legislator is also working at the parliamentary level to adjust existing laws. There is a law that establishes the control of alcohol and marijuana, but from Riesch’s point of view other drugs should be controlled as well.
“From the role of the Highway Police, it must be controlled and, if necessary, allocate resources to improve these controls, allocating more resources for Accountability,” Reisch concluded.
